Which Method of Drain Cleaning Does My Drain Need?

Posted by ADB Septic on March 27, 2019

drain cleaningIf you have a clogged drain in your home, it can lead to serious problems. Poor drainage, gurgling drains, poor water pressure, water buildup in your sinks, toilets, and bathtubs, and bad odors are all side effects of a clogged drain. If your clog can’t simply be pulled out by hand, you will need professional drain cleaning to clear it out. When it comes to professional drain cleaning, you have two main options: hydro jetting and power snaking. We’ve broken down the two options to help you decide which option is right for you.

Hydro Jetting

Hydro jetting is similar to power washing. It uses a powerful stream of pressurized water coming from a hose with a special nozzle. The stream of water will clear out debris in the sewer line, with the force of water being powerful enough to break up clogs and dislodge debris. During hydro jetting, water blasts through your plumbing, completely stripping the walls of your pipes.

Pros

The most significant benefit to hydro jetting is that it is highly effective. It can remove any clog, and can even blast out tree roots. It’s also versatile, being an effective choice for residential and commercial sewer lines. There are no chemicals necessary for hydro jetting, meaning harsh and potentially hazardous chemicals do not need to be present in your plumbing or your home. Hydro jetting is also a great way to perform regular plumbing maintenance, as it removes the natural build up of grease and minerals.

Cons

One of the disadvantages of hydro jetting is that it is not a DIY method and can only be performed by professionals. It can also be damaging to older pipes that cannot handle the pressure of a hydro jet. A professional service will use a video camera to inspect the pipes before the process to make sure they’re strong enough.

Power Snaking

Power snaking is an old, tried and true method to clear clogs. It involves using a tool called an auger, which consist of a steel cable with a tip designed to penetrate and break up clogs. An auger will be fed through the drain and the sharp tip will push through clogs, creating an opening.

Pros

One of the benefits of this method is that it is a tried and true method to clearing clogs. It is the oldest and most reliable method to clearing clogs. This method will also not damage pipes, even older more fragile pipes, unlike the forceful process of hydro jetting. Power snaking can also alert you of a more serious problem. If power snaking doesn’t work, you will no that there is a more severe problem like a tree root.

Cons

The biggest disadvantage to power snaking is that it is not as effective as hydro jetting. It will only clear clogs as wide as the tip of the auger, and will make a hole in a clog rather than dislodging it from the pipe. Typically, power snaking will provide temporary relief of a clog rather than a permanent solution.

Which Option is Right for Me?

Both of these options are effective methods to clear basic clogs and improve drainage speeds. However, hydro jetting is more versatile and powerful, making it the better option for more severe clogs. It is also a good option for regular maintenance, as it removes the natural build up of grease and minerals. Power snaking is a good option for older, weaker plumbing, or for a temporary solution. However, if you’re not sure what type of clog you have or what the condition of your plumbing is, don’t be afraid to call in the experts. When you schedule a professional drain cleaning, a technician can assess your clog and help you decide which option is right for you.
