How to Tell When Your Drains Need to be Cleaned

Posted by ADB Septic on September 3, 2019

Clogged drains can cause serious damage to your septic tank and home if they are not taken care of quickly. Yet some homeowners may not even notice that their pipes are becoming clogged until it is too late. Backed-up drains can be caused by a variety of different factors, some much more time sensitive than others. Cleaning your drains more often can actually help prevent drain-related issues. But how do you know when it is time to have your drains cleaned? Here are a few different warning signs that can indicate your drains are getting clogged up.

Unusually Slow Drainage

If you have noticed that your sink or bathtub is taking significantly longer to drain than it used to, then chances are your drain is close to becoming clogged. Slow drains can also be a sign of more serious septic issues, such as a hidden root problem. If you observe slow drainage in your home it is best to have a plumbing professional take a look sooner than later.

The Smell of Sewage

One hard-to-miss warning sign that your drains need to be cleaned is the unpleasant odor of sewage. Foul smells coming from your drains usually means that food particles and grease have started to clog up your pipes.

Another reason you may be detecting an awful smell coming from inside your house is because a small creature like a rodent has become trapped in your drain lines. Animal carcasses stuck in your pipes can be a serious health concern for your family. Although these cases are not as common as food particle buildup, the health issues it can cause are not worth waiting around to find out. If you smell any foul odors around your sinks or bathtubs it is best to contact a septic professional right away.

Seeing Groups of Flies

If you have noticed an influx of tiny flies, particularly around your bathrooms and kitchens, then there is a good chance you need to clean your drains out. Waste build up in clogged pipes usually attracts flies pretty quickly.

The two types of flies you have to be on the lookout for are fruit and drain flies. Fruit flies can be initially drawn to your house by the smell of sewage accumulation before invading your kitchen looking for any exposed food. Drain flies on the other hand will congregate directly inside backed-up pipes. These diminutive flies actually breed in damp enclosed spaces such as drains, septic tanks, and sewers.

Hearing Strange Sounds

If you notice strange gurgling sounds while using the bathtub or sink, then its likely your drain has accumulated too much dirt and grease. This type of obstruction can create air bubbles which cause an unusual gurgling noise when water is forced through small openings. If you keep hearing strange sounds while your bathtub or sink are in use then it is time to contact a septic professional.
