DIY Vs. Professional Drain Cleaning: Pros and Cons

Posted by ADB Septic on September 24, 2019

If you’re noticing the signs of a clogged drain such as gurgling, slow drainage, or odors, you’ll need to figure out how to clear it. When you think about drain cleaning, you have two options: you can do it yourself or you can call in a professional. There are benefits to each approach, but each one also comes with its own set of risks. We’ve laid out the pros and cons of each approach to drain cleaning to help you figure out which one will suit your needs.

DIY Drain Cleaning

When you opt for DIY drain cleaning, you might try to snake your drain yourself either with a snake you bought from the hardware store or a wire hanger. You might attempt to shove something down the drain to scoop out or penetrate the clog. You might also attempt to use a plunger to pull the clog out of the drain. Finally, some people even attempt to stick their hands down their drains to scoop out clogs. People use different tactics to try to clear clogs, but most DIY attempts involve shoving something down the drain to scoop out the clog.

The biggest advantage that people see to DIY drain cleaning is that it is less expensive than hiring a professional. You also will not have to wait for an appointment with a professional. Instead, you can handle the clog immediately. If your efforts are successful, your sink or tub will be back in working order as quickly as possible.

Although there are some benefits to DIY drain cleaning, there are a fair amount of risks. Often times, DIY attempts are ineffective and the drain remains clogged. If your attempt fails, you can also accidentally damage your plumbing, which will lead to costly repairs. DIY drain cleaning can also be dangerous and can result in injury if you’re not properly trained. Lastly, because DIY efforts are often fruitless, you risk wasting your time and money on any equipment you purchase.

Professional Drain Cleaning

When you hire a professional to clear your drain, there are two basic approaches: water jetting and power snaking. The first, and more powerful, is water jetting. For this process, a water jet will blast water through your pipes at high pressure and speed. The water will blast out any clogs, clearing out your plumbing and stripping the pipe walls of any grease or other buildup. Power snaking is not as powerful as water jetting, but can also be effective. This method is effective for smaller clogs or older pipes that can’t handle a water jet. Power snaking pushes through clogs and breaks them up, but will not strip the walls of the pipes like water jetting. However, in both cases, water and other materials will once again be able to pass through your pipes, eliminating any issues associated with the clog.

The biggest advantage to professional drain cleaning is that you can be sure that your clog will be cleared. Because the job is done by a professional, there will be no accidental damage. You can be sure that your drain will return to effective and quick drainage. A professional drain cleaning will also solve any additional problems caused by the clog, such as odors and concerns about water cleanliness. Professional drain cleaning can also improve the lifespan of your plumbing and prevent severe clogs.

The major disadvantage to professional drain cleaning is that it can be costly. However, you will save money in the long run with a properly functioning system, free of damage. When you opt for professional drain cleaning, you will also have to wait for the next available appointment and wait for your technician to arrive. However, if your clog has reached emergency status, you should be able to receive immediate help.
