5 New Years Resolutions to Make for Your Septic System in 2019

Posted by ADB Septic on December 26, 2018

2019 is right around the corner, and that means it’s a great time to make resolutions to improve your life in the New Year. One area that can greatly improve your life is to devote time to maintaining your septic system. Your septic system is an essential part of your home, responsible for disposing of waste and treating water to make sure it’s clean and safe to drink. For this reason, it’s important to take care of it. To make a change and start taking proper care of your septic system in the New Year, make the following resolutions.

new years

1. Pump Your Tank

Pumping your septic tank regularly is the single most important thing you can do to maintain your system. Your tank collects solid waste and allows water to pass through into the drain field where it is filtered and treated. Eventually, the solids will fill your tank. If you don’t empty them, solid waste will leak into your yard and can even travel back up your pipes and enter your sink. A full septic tank can also cause damage to your septic system that can be difficult to repair. For this reason, it’s important to pump out your septic tank regularly to make sure it never overflows. In the New Year, decide to stick to a strict pumping schedule to avoid unnecessary problems.

2. Conserve Water

When you do your best to conserve water in your home, your septic system will thank you. Using too much water can lead to an overworked system that could be damaged. You can even flood the system, leading to permanent failure. To avoid these issues, take small steps to conserve water in your home such as fixing leaks, turning off the faucet while you brush your teeth, and running only full loads of dishes and clothing. When you conserve water in your home, you can help extend the life of your septic system.

3. Watch What You Flush

When you have a septic system, nothing should travel to the tank other than water, waste, and toilet paper. Avoid flushing non-flushable items such as diapers, tampons, food, and hair. These items can lead to clogs in your pipes that can damage your septic system. When these clogs go untreated, they can even cause pipes to burst. To ensure a healthy septic system with a long life, you should be careful what you flush down the toilet and other drains.

4. Have a Professional Drain Cleaning

When your plumbing clogs, your septic system can become damaged. Clogged pipes can cause your pipes to burst. They can also overwork your system because it is more difficult for water to pass through, meaning your system needs to work twice as hard to pump water. If your pipes are clogged, a professional drain cleaning is the best way to ensure that they are completely clear. A professional will use a high pressure water jet that will blast a stream of water through your pipes, completely stripping the walls and eliminating all clogs. In the New Year, avoid DIY drain cleaning and hire a professional to keep your septic system running smoothly.

5. Conduct Annual Inspections

Professional inspections can help keep your septic system in good working order. Especially in older systems, these inspections can help you identify issues early on. When you catch these issues when they’re small, you can make adjustments and repairs before they turn into big, costly issues. Professional septic system inspections are the best way to catch damage early on and ensure that your system is in good working order. In the New Year, have your septic system inspected to keep it in proper working order and avoid any problems.
