5 Signs You May Need Sewer Repairs

Posted by ADB Septic on October 31, 2019

A slow-moving drain is not always easily fixed with a plunger.

Sometimes what seems like a minor plumbing issue could be a sign of a major sewer line problem. Since sewer lines are primarily underground, many homeowners do not even notice there is an issue until the plumbing problems begin to snowball and damage other systems in their homes. Sewer line repairs can be costly, and the longer it takes you to catch the issue, the more expensive repairs can be. Here are some signs to be on the lookout for that might mean your sewer line needs repairs.

Inconsistent Toilet Bowl Water Level

If you have noticed that your water level varies significantly throughout the day, there may be a problem with your sewer line. If you suspect that your water levels may be fluctuating, pay attention to the water level in your toilet bowl. If your toilet bowl is practically empty in the morning and then almost overflowing at night without anyone using it, then chances are there is an issue with your sewer line.

Animals Are Being Attracted to Your Yard

If you notice a sudden influx of animals in your yard, this may be a sign of a problem with your sewer line. Animals, especially small rodents and insects, could be attracted to a smell coming from a broken sewage pipe. If animals are inexplicably flocking to your backyard, you should contact a septic professional to inspect your sewer line for cracks.

Foul Odors

Noticing an unpleasant smell radiating from the ground outside your house is another sign that there may be a problem with your sewer line. It is important to contact a qualified plumbing company as soon as you notice strong sewage smells outside your house. If you wait too long to address the problem, the odor could spread to your basement and bathroom and leave room for mold and mildew to enter your septic system.

Sluggish Drains

Slow draining water is one of the most telling signs that your sewage line needs repair. Clogging in the main sewer line affects all other lines, so if only one toilet or sink is taking a long time to drain then you most likely just dealing with a blockage in a single pipe. However, if you notice that all of the drains and toilets in your house are taking an unusually long time to drain, there is a good chance there is a problem with your sewer line.

Hearing Strange Noises

If you hear unusual sounds like gurgling when your toilet flushes or sink drains then there may be an issue with your sewer lines. Fully functioning sewer lines should not make any noise, so if it sounds like water is struggling to get through your pipes, chances are there is a blockage ready to take over your sewer line. If you hear strange noises when draining or flushing, be sure to contact a qualified plumbing company immediately.
